Moose Interrupts Play

Moose Interrupts Play
By John E Matthews

Tom Austin was playing a round with his regular golfing buddies in Smithstown, Maine when a bull moose made it a little difficult to play. "We were on a hole cut deep into a valley. Anything you said echoed off the walls of the small canyon", said Austin. He continued, "It was a short par four and we were walking to our second shots, when all of a sudden a big moose strolled out of the woods and onto the edge of the fairway."

Apparently, the moose stopped and looked at the foursome. It was about 30 yards from their balls. It made no sound at all, except for its audible breathing. The men felt comfortable enough to approach their balls and prepare for their shots to the green. Austin was away and stood over his ball. But when he started his backswing, the moose let out a loud bellow. Austin said, "It was sort of like a 'moo' from a cow, but about ten times louder. He just did it once and was quiet again." Startled, Austin stopped his swing and walked away from his ball. His buddies giggled a little, but tried to let Austin focus on his shot. He addressed his ball again, pulled his club back, and the moose let out a loud "moo" again. "My buddies lost it. They fell to the ground with uncontrollable laughter, " Austin said. He continued, "I had to stop my swing again, because it was pretty darn funny."

After the foursome contained their laughter, Austin addressed his ball again and started his back swing. Again, the moose let out a loud bellow. But this time Austin went through with the shot, even though he started to laugh. He chili-dipped the ball, and it rolled into the creek fifty yards in front of him. After the hapless shot, the moose began to "moo" again, but this time it repeated its "moo" rapidly. "It was like he was laughing at me! I think the thing was trying to interrupt my swing and screw with my game", Austin said.

After the others players made their shots, with no "moo" interruptions, the moose quietly strolled back into the woods.
